Simple Thought of the Mind

AA little while back my wife and I went out for a stroll down the main thoroughfare of the city, which is in the business district. We walked the entire length of Main Street, consisting of about ten blocks, and during our walk I noticed a sign which had eleven lamps burned out. I got to thinking how unattractive that looked, and still walking along I noticed the store-windows with some of the lamps burned out.

On our way back I decided to take the name of every store in which window or sign lamps were out and the number of lights out and call on the business men personally and tell them how unattractive their windows looked in comparison with the well-lighted windows of their neighbors.

Couple walking by a store at night.
We walked the entire length of Main Street.

I told them that they might just as well not have any lights in their windows if half of the lamps were to be out, as it detracted from their display, and the well-lighted windows next door were much more attractive to the public. The jealousy that exists between merchants immediately came to the front. I was thanked for my interest and given an order to replace the burned-out lamps and it was surprising the number of lamps that were needed, ranging from five to sixty watt.

I think it would be a good idea for more men in Central Stations in the New Business Departments to do likewise, as it will increase the sale of lamps as well as the consumption of juice.
